Prologue: The Solar Wars

Long, long ago, when the Earth was new, The Solar gave it warmth and light. Volcanoes burst out of the ground, spilling and churning lava all over the land, lightning sparked and crackled, and the oceans of molten rock raged. There was no life on Earth, no plants, animals or any kind of organism, just The Solar, its flares reaching out to rule the nine planets beneath its command.

But all this was to change. A comet, from millions and millions of light years away, soared towards the most distant of The Solar’s planets, a tiny ice globe known as Pluto, and as a result of a collision between the two, a small sphere of rock and ice hurtled into space towards Earth, chipped out of the surface of the coldest planet. It was hit many times by asteroids, and eventually, one of The Solar’s own flares. The warmth of The Solar’s rays penetrated the rock, and deep within its core, power began to stir.

The rock slowed itself to a halt, until it found itself a new planet. It began to orbit the Earth, freezing the world into an abyss of chilling, perpetual darkness. From the comet’s collision, The Lunar had been created, and it ruled over the Earth for what seemed like the blink of an eye, since The Solar soon discovered the theft of one of its planets, and, outraged, screamed down to attack The Lunar.

There was another almighty collision, and this caused tiny sparks, mixtures of both Lunar and Solar, to fall to Earth. Those that were mostly Solar formed into creatures of the day, and those of Lunar, creatures of the night. Above in the sky, the battle between The Lunar and The Solar for possession of the planet began.

The Solar’s heat during battle melted the ice covering the planet that The Lunar had created, save for the two polar ice caps, and turned the Earth once again into a globe of molten rock. The Lunar fought back, cooling the lava, and thus creating The Sky Mirror, and freezing a third of it into solid rock once again.

As the battle raged on, the two Kalms were born.

When The Solar’s power overtook The Lunar’s, the darkness lifted into light, creating Dark Kalm or dawn. The Solar then rose high into the sky, until it was directly over the Earth, creating the Solar-zenith or midday. Then after Solar-zenith, The Lunar fought back, and The Solar, its power temporarily beaten, sank below the horizon, and the veil of night settled once more, creating Light Kalm or sunset. Victorious again, The Lunar would rise high into the sky, until it was directly over the Earth. This was known as Lunar-zenith, or midnight. After Lunar-zenith, The Solar would fight back, The Lunar’s power would weaken, and Dark Kalm would approach again, the days and nights passing as each side of the battle achieved a momentary victory.

The Lunar, desperate to keep a planet of its own, once a month began to summon its powers to their greatest, until a full moon, or Dark Zenith, was achieved. The Lunar then attacked The Solar, but the sparks that fell were purely Lunar, forming vicious, unnatural monsters of the night. It then took a full month for The Lunar to summon its powers again, until another Dark Zenith was reached. For eons, the titans battled on, the Kalms passing, whilst life thrived beneath on the Earth, children of both The Solar and The Lunar wondering which would eventually conquer the Earth.

The children of The Lunar, mostly carnivores, emerged only at night, or at Light Kalm. They were taught to kill or banish as many children of The Solar as possible, since Solar children were mostly herbivores, insectivores or fish-eaters, and the children of The Solar were taught never to associate with Lunar children if they valued their lives.

And so, not only were the owners of the planet against one another, but also the planet’s inhabitants which they had created accidentally. But since the inhabitants all had Lunar and Solar inside them, they needed each other and, of course, The Lunar and The Solar, in order to stay alive. Few of the creatures created saw it that way, and as a result, a minority lived their lives with a complete disregard for children of the other titan, and occasionally, for their own. The following story tells of two such animals, dinosaurs of the Late Cretaceous period, yet there had been creatures of their attitudes millions of years both before and after, and there still will be for years to come. This story tells of how these disruptive individuals wrecked not only their friends’ and enemies’ lives, but also their own. Thus, the period of their lives was from then on known as the Dark Era.
